1-2:45 PM RACHAEL SHANNON CRAFTING CIRCLE

We will go through a list of different questions about relationship to body/ where our feelings about bodies come from, then have a discussion and/or craft about it. We have been embroidering body images on fabrics to be applied to pillows in the vestibule. A top-optional crafting circle fused with discussion.

3-4:45 PM KRIS GREY: Craft-Identified: a support group

In recent years many colleges, universities, and other institutions have removed the word craft from their titles often times replacing it with more academically legitimized words like “design”. In the wake of this craftaphobia, makers may be left feeling… well, lots of feelings. Or perhaps the craft/art divide has got you fired up? This group is open to craft-identified individuals and our allies to share feelings around these issues and more. Your facilitator, Dr. Justin Credible, initiates a safe craft-affirming environment for you to offer and receive support.

5-7 PM TIF ROBINETTE: AUTO EROTICISM, MAGICK, & THE CREATIVE NERVE

1-3 PM CAITLIN ROSE: MAPPING QUEER CRAFT

This workshop will function as a collaborative think tank of queer makers, craftivists, and thinkers to start to map the shared terrain between craft and queer. We will examine histories of both craft and queer, then move closer to the horizon of these two shifting spaces and unpack how they function in contemporary art practices. This isn’t about creating a hard definition of what queer craft is and can be but a formation of a lexicon to strengthen our art praxis and understanding of ourselves in the larger culture that ignores the importance of the queer handmade. Prepare yourself to excitingly talk about the social constructs of queer and craft as the other, queer strategies and gay aesthetics, and how craft provides a unique vehicle for queer world building.

3-5 PM ZEESY POWERS: How to make a Moving Image:

Anyone can make a movie, and anyone can make an animation. You just need access to electricity, some basic equipment, and an idea. In this workshop we’re going to make 2 kinds of moving image: a gif, and a video for YouTube. Bring your laptop, your phone, and/or your camera and whatever cables those things might need to connect to each other. Doesn’t matter how old these things are. If you don’t have any, don’t worry, well have some on hand. At the end of this workshop, you’ll have two short animations, as well as the basic skills you’ll need to make more complicated animations of your own.

Services will be available to help you adjust to parenthood throughout the performance and a hotline email will be provided valid for the rest of your baby’s life.

Hi Tiger (Erica, Cory, Derek and Roy) was formed in August 2010. Like an accident you slow down to look at, they have been referred to as Art Punk, serious business of tragedy, and glamorous sex machines. Hi Tiger’s debut recording I LOVE MUSIC was released August 5th, 2011. Their forthcoming album FAGS AND ENGLISH MAJORS is due 2013. Listen here.

BUT BEFORE YOU SEE HI TIGER, JOIN US AT THE OPENING RECEPTION BELOW!

NOT OVER: 25 Years of Visual AIDS

PART OF THE NOT OVER EXHIBITION SERIES

June 1–June 30, 2013

La MaMa La Galleria

6 E 1st Street
New York, NY 10003

NOT OVER: 25 Years of Visual AIDS looks back at the history of Visual AIDS and contemporary AIDS politics to create a glimpse into a quarter century of AIDS, art and activism. Curators Kris Nuzzi and Sur Rodney (Sur) link artists of a generation born after 1970 to an earlier generation of artists that were active in the 1980s.

By creating these layered connections and presenting artwork by both historical and contemporary artists, the exhibition aims to add to the ongoing dialogue and position the work within a layered timeline of AIDS, art and culture, using art as a means to educate, encourage discussion and inform that AIDS IS NOT OVER.

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 1, 6-9 PM

GALLERY HOURS
WEDNESDAY-SUNDAY, 1-7:30 PM
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Please enter at 247 East 2nd St.

The Blue Balcony is a ciné-sculpture people can enter created by the artist group et al. Referencing the atmospheric movie palaces of the 1920s’ the sculpture’s interior posses a vaulted ceiling constellated with specks of light and walls doubling as façade scenery. The resultant effect is the impression of being in the open air. As was often the case in the atmospheric cinemas, there is ambient cove lighting left on during the feature, also changing to correspond with the film’s tenor. Finally, three tiers of seats provide ample space for an audience of 14 to sit and face a sheet of glass looking out onto the ripple of the leaves in the community garden.

Thematically the balcony is decorated with allusions to The Blue Bird by Maurice Maeterlinck, the no longer extant labyrinth of Versailles and accompanying Aesop’s Fable animal fountains, and the 1924 silent cubist film L’Inhumaine featuring the vampish Georgette Leblanc and sets designed by the modernist architect Robert Mallet-Stevens.

As the plots to many a film have been invigorated by their twist ending, The Blue Balcony is in no different a category. We won’t be screening movies! Instead the projected image on a movie screen will be permanently deferred during the duration of the film. The audience will still be able to hear the now disembodied soundtrack, but instead of seeing an image a computer will process the levels of luminosity in each film frame and disperse the quantity of light for said frame onto the architecture of the space. Thus replacing the projected image with peripheral lighting, leaving the audience’s eyes free to roam.
