Spectacle Theater, Japan Society and Allied Productions present a one-night only outdoor screening of Kaizo Hayashi's 1986 film noir homage TO SLEEP, SO AS TO DREAM at Les Petits Versailles community garden in conjunction with the 2021 edition of the Japan Cuts Film Festival.
New 2K Restoration! Born from the vestiges of some long forgotten dream, Kaizo Hayashi’s debut film is a hauntingly beautiful ode to the silent era that yearns for a distant past—back to an illusory world teeming with new excitements, novel invention and cryptic riddles.
An aging silent film actress hires a private eye and his wacky but helpful assistant to track down her missing daughter, Bellflower. The two follow a succession of bizarre, obscure clues, until they track down the location of the kidnappers and the daughter.
Curated by Steve Macfarlane.
