DEC 1st - Jack Waters in Still Beginning: The 30th Annual Day With(out) Art
Whitney Museum of American Art
99 Gansevoort St, New York, New York 10014
December 1st, 2019 from 3 - 5 PM
For the thirtieth annual Day With(out) Art, Visual AIDS presents STILL BEGINNING, a program of seven newly commissioned videos responding to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic by Shanti Avirgan, Nguyen Tan Hoang, Carl George, Viva Ruiz, Iman Shervington, Jack Waters/Victor F.M. Torres, and Derrick Woods-Morrow.The seven short videos range in subject from anti-stigma work in New Orleans to public sex culture in Chicago, highlighting pioneering AIDS activism and staging intergenerational conversations. Recalling Gregg Bordowitz’s reminder that “THE AIDS CRISIS IS STILL BEGINNING,” the video program resists narratives of resolution or conclusion, considering the continued urgency of HIV/AIDS in the contemporary moment while revisiting resonant cultural histories from the past three decades. The NYC premiere at the Whitney will be followed by a conversation with artists Shanti Avirgan, Viva Ruiz, and Jack Waters, moderated by Visual AIDS Programs Manager Kyle Croft. This event is free but RSVP is required.Accessibility Note:All videos will be screened with captions. Visitors with photosensitive epilepsy, or other light sensitivity issues, should be aware of that one of the seven videos contains several minutes of rapid flashing, contrasting light. An additional warning will be given during the program before the video plays.More information: http://visualaids.org/projects/day-without-art-2019
